College badminton team finds success in Edmonton

Players victorious in some tough matches

OLDS — Members of the Olds College badminton team finished first in two categories and placed third in another during an Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference (ACAC) tournament in Edmonton.

That tournament was held Jan. 19 at the Kings University.

Troy Morgan placed first in men’s singles C and the duo of Rylan Head and Jenna Kardos finished first in the mixed doubles C category.

Priyanna Ramdhani placed third in women’s singles A division.

Noah Jeffrey and Rylan Head finished fifth in mixed doubles A. Pryianna Ramdhani and Troy Morgan placed fifth in mixed doubles.

Broncos head coach Mary Smith said several members of the team obtained some significant achievements “even with the tough draws at this tournament.”

“The other members of the team placed in the middle of the pack, ranging from fifth to ninth place out of eight to 14 draw sizes,” she wrote in an email.

Rookie Beau Stevenenson defeated Kings third-year player Liam Nutma in a three-game battle (19-21, 21-18, 21-17).

Also, Morgan and Ramdhani, in their first year on the team, defeated Concordia's Tyson Tsen and Jasleen Kaur in another three-game battle (21-18, 17-21, 21-18).

And after losing their first match, Head, in his second year on the team and Kardos in her first, went on to defeat third-year Kings player Aakash Panchal and Erica Jorgensen who is in her second year on that team in two games (21-13, 21-9).

Head and Kardos then beat the Kings duo of second-year player Fitz Galang and third-year player Chanel Simrose 21-12, 21-19.

Also, after losing their first match, Head and Noah Jeffrey went on to beat Kings players Galang and Liam Nutma, then downed Concordia's team of Chava Robles and Lane Toma 21-15, 21-11.
