Both the men's and women's Olds College Broncos Alberta Colleges Athletic League volleyball teams had tough weekends, going winless in home-and-home matches against the Ambrose University College Lions on Friday and Saturday. The men were bounced in four sets on Friday in Calgary and straight sets on Saturday at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The men also lost in four sets on Oct. 15 to the Lions. They now sit fourth in the league standings.

Meanwhile, the women lost all three matches in straight sets. They now are fifth in the league standings.

David Wildman, coach of both the men's and women's teams, said the men didn't block as well as they were capable of on Saturday, which led to many scoring opportunities for the Lions, which they were able to take advantage of.

“On the men's side, that wasn't our strongest (match). Our blocking … was non-existent and when you're playing a team like Ambrose, who's number 1 in the league right now, our back row was just getting abused on their hits and they took it to us,” he said.

Wildman said the men's team will continue to refine its tactical performance, hoping to shore up its defence and service game to allow for more offence.

As for the women, the season has been tough thus far, without a win. Wildman said because most of the players have other sports backgrounds with volleyball being secondary to basketball or soccer, continuing to build on the fundamentals of the game will be the focus going forward toward the end of the season.
