The Didsbury Dragons are going to the championship game after winning last Saturday's football game against the Sundre Capital Pressure Bison 40-9.

Despite below-zero temperatures and wind, the players fought hard for the opportunity to continue on to the final game of the season - the championship game.

“It was a really good win for us,” said Dragons coach Mark Lefebvre. “We executed well on offence and we didn't have to hold anything back, no special plays or anything like that. We executed a lot of really good plays and then we were able to just handle them pretty good on defence.

He noted that the homefield advantage did play a big part in the victory.

“In a playoff game, it's a real solid thing to have the fans out there, freezing to death to support us,” he said. “It was a cold day, cold wind out there and to have your home guys supporting you, it's a real positive thing, a 10th man on the field.”

The location of the championship game wasn't set at press time, but Lefebvre said they will be playing against either Carstairs or Victory Christian School in Edmonton, depending on who wins that match.

Sundre Bison coach Don McCullough said “I think for the weather conditions, both teams played well. It was a good season for our guys and good luck to Didsbury next against whoever's in the finals.”

Because they lost this game, Sundre is done for the season. McCullough added that his team played well, considering the circumstances, and he's looking forward to next year already.

“I think overall this season, we had our ups and downs, but I think near the end of the season we started to come together as a team. We'll have a good core of kids back next year so it should be good.”
