The Sundre atom B Huskies could not have hoped for a better performance during a recent three-day tournament hosted by the team.

"We won the tournament," said coach Perry Smeets.

Including the local team, eight squads faced off from Friday, Jan. 8 to Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Sundre arena.

The Huskies played the opening game on Friday against one of two teams from Red Deer. The game had to be put on hold when one of the players from Red Deer suffered a concussion and was subsequently taken to the Sundre hospital as a precaution, said Smeets.

That game later went into overtime followed by a shootout, with the Huskies winning 8-7, said the coach.

Their second game was the following day against Rimbey, who lost 6-2 to the local team. The final was up against Sylvan Lake, who the Huskies were able to shut out 7-0.

"They played nine full periods," said Smeets about his team.

"The boys played really well. All the hard work they put in prior during practices paid off ó the boys came out to play."

The competition was really good, he said. The only team in the tournament the Huskies had played against before was Sylvan Lake.

The number of teams participating in the annual event was about average, but the teams were bigger and so there were more kids registered all around, he said.

Hockey fans also came out to cheer them on.

"All the games were well attended," said Smeets.

The tournament was well organized thanks to the efforts of parent volunteers who make the event possible by coordinating the variety of tasks that must be taken care of, he added.

The atom B Huskies play their next home game on Saturday, Jan. 30 starting at about 2:10 p.m. Visit the Sundre Minor Hockey Association's website, www.sundreminorhockey.ca to find a full schedule of all the team's games.
