It was all smiles for Jordan Kibermanis, 26, who was awarded with the Wendy Schmidt commemorative plaque last Tuesday afternoon at the Innisfail Bowling Lanes.

Kibermanis is one of 14 athletes in the newly formed Innisfail Special Olympics chapter. On April 3, members were awarded with medals for their work in one of two sports — either gymnastics or bowling though about six were involved in both.

“Oh my goodness, oh my God,” said Kibermanis when he heard he was chosen to receive the plaque, awarded by Marge Schmidt for being the most improved bowler.

“I started this year,” he said of playing competitively. The chapter started offering bowling in July, when Kibermanis got on board. He improved over the season by 18 points.

“I like seeing all the good staff,” he said of his favourite part of being involved.

After the medal presentations the group broke off into groups for a fun afternoon of bowling.

“They are really impressive,” said coach Maaike VanSoren who has been a bowling coach for the last 31 years and has been coaching the team since the organization formed last summer.

“They are really thankful and listen well,” she said. “They enjoy themselves — I've gotten quite a few hugs, and squeezed a little too hard sometimes when they get a strike,” she said smiling. VanSoren is one of four coaches involved.

Dayleen Lobb, another athlete who did both gymnastics and bowling, is excited for the next season.

“I will do it again next season,” she said.

The group hopes to start some summer sports once the warmer weather hits such as bocce.

Because the group is still in its first year, it hasn't held any tournaments but coordinators are hopeful with the Olds chapter nearby and now Rocky Mountain House starting one, to start scheduling game time between the three communities.

The group is also accepting volunteers and new athletes from Innisfail, Bowden, Spruce View, Penhold and surrounding areas. Anyone interested in joining or volunteering can call 403-227-1847 or pick up an application at Timeless Monuments on main street.
