ACAC decision on accepting more Olds sports pending

Olds College administration is eagerly anticipating a decision on the institution's pending application for the volleyball, soccer and golf teams to join the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. The decision is expected in May.

Greg Lendvay, the college's director of health and wellness, said ACAC officials came to campus in early February to meet with senior administration and look over various facilities to ensure that the college has support from them going forward. The group also met with the various coaches of the affected teams.

“They met with our senior administration … just to ensure that a) we had support from our senior administration and b) that we're ready with our coaching staff … (and) that we could be sustainable over the long term and attract athletes to Olds College,” he said, adding the college is confident that the application will be successful.

ACAC officials also checked out the college's academic programs as well.

Lendvay said he believes the college's recent success in the past few years in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League has positioned the Broncos well to make the step up to the higher level ACAC next season.

“The athletes consistently want to move forward to the ACAC level, a little bit higher league. And I think we're also going to be able to attract a different type of athlete,” he said, noting there will be more scholarship opportunities available to athletes at the ACAC level, including the Jimmy Condon scholarship, worth $1,800 per year to athletes.

“It's a desired league. It's one of the most competitive leagues in Canada and we still think we're going to have a very strong JV program in the ACAL league, but we'll also have a better opportunity to attract athletes that want that ACAC experience,” Lendvay said.
