Terry Fox runs

Organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Water Valley are again encouraging families and individuals to come out in support of cancer awareness and research. The 39th annual Water Valley run goes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Water Valley are again encouraging families and individuals to come out in support of cancer awareness and research.

The 39th annual Water Valley run goes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with registration at the Chinook Creative Arts Centre at 8:30 a.m.

More than $16,000 was raised during the Water Valley run in 2018, with more than 90 participants of all ages taking part. Longtime organizer Mary Thomson says she hopes to see even more participants and more money raised this year.

“We are looking forward to another great year,” said Thomson. “It’s a real family event because everyone has been touched by cancer one way or another.” As in past years, the Water Valley first responders are scheduled to help out at this year’s run, she said.

Since 1989 the Water Valley run has brought in almost $170,000.

Unfortunately an event organizer could not be found for a run in Didsbury in 2019, so residents there are being encouraged to take part in the runs in Water Valley or Olds, said Christie Krawchuk with the Terry Fox Foundation.

The Olds run starts at the Olds fire hall at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 9 a.m.

More than 9,000 communities across Canada are expected to take part in Terry Fox runs and related events.

Terry Fox runs and related events are scheduled to take place at area schools later this month.

Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete and humanitarian who attempted to run across Canada in 1980 in support of cancer research and awareness. He died in June 1981. Since his death the Terry Fox Foundation has overseen annual charity runs and other events to raise money for cancer research and in the support of those dealing with the disease. To date more than $750 million has been raised worldwide.
