Organizers of the 2018 3D National Archery Championships to be held in Sundre in April have given an update on the project to the Mountain View County (MVC) policies and priorities committee.

The review came during the committee's recent regularly scheduled meeting in council chambers. The committee is made up of all MVC councillors.

Darrin and Nick Rudy of the Elk Ridge Archery Club made the presentation to the committee, outlining plans for the championship to be held indoors at several Sundre facilities on April 27-29.

The event will feature archers of all ages and various skill levels, said Darrin.

Between 400 and 600 competitors are expected to attend the championships.

The Elk Ridge Archery Club will be hosting the event.

Organizers expect motels in Sundre, Olds and elsewhere will be accommodating participants and families, he said.

"There will be a huge economic spinoff," he said.

Competitors will pay fees to participate.

Organizers are approaching local governments to help cover the costs, he said.

No official funding request has yet been made to MVC.

Committee members passed a motion instructing administration to work with organizers to find out what grant funding might be available and to report back to council.

Committee members also instructed administration to get in contact with Town of Sundre administration to explore cooperation options regarding the championship.

"It looks like a very interesting event," said MVC Deputy Reeve and committee chair Angela Aalbers.
