A Calgary woman has been charged in connection to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 2 north of Innisfail that resulted in injuries to a pair of young children.

RCMP from the QEII Integrated Traffic Unit and the Innisfail detachment, along with local fire department crews were called shortly after 6 p.m. on Sept. 21 to the collision area of the highway near Old Pole Road as traffic flow in both directions was being disrupted as a result of the crash.

Witnesses reported to RCMP that the driver of a small green sedan had lost control while attempting to make a lane change. When the vehicle lost control it struck another vehicle before crossing into the median and striking the cable barrier, said RCMP. Police said the cable barrier system remained intact and prevented the vehicle from encroaching into oncoming traffic.

Emergency crews treated several occupants, including two children who were riding in the green sedan, for minor injuries.

As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old female driver from Calgary was charged under the provincial Traffic Safety Act. She was issued a 30-day licence suspension for the presence of alcohol under the Alberta Zero Alcohol Tolerance Program (AZAT) for GDL/Novice Drivers. RCMP said a passenger was also taken into police custody on an unrelated matter.

Both northbound and southbound traffic were reduced to a single lane for about one hour while emergency crews cleared the scene.

Two hours after the crash, the QEII Integrated Traffic Unit and Red Deer Emergency Services were called to a two-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on the QEII Highway just south of Red Deer.

RCMP said witnesses reported that the driver of a northbound sedan lost control and struck the cable barrier, which remained intact and prevented the vehicle from encroaching into oncoming traffic. The occupants in the sedan were not injured. Several minutes later, a motorcycle with one rider, struck the disabled vehicle. The rider was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP said the driver of the sedan that initially lost control was charged under the provincial Traffic Safety Act.

Traffic along the northbound lanes of Highway 2 was affected for about one hour while emergency crews cleared the scene.
