Spring may not look like it has arrived but Rosefield Centre is looking for green thumbed volunteers eager to dig in to spring.

Audrey Hobbs, Innisfail Hospital and Care Centre coordinator of volunteer resources, is looking for volunteers with green thumbs and willing hearts to help tend the little piece of outdoor heaven surrounding Rosefield Centre.

“We have two garden areas that we have for our residents and patients,” said Hobbs. “One is smaller while the other includes a veranda, two raised flower beds, and rose bushes. With spring showing up this week, we need to line up at least 10 volunteers to help us maintain the green area.”

She said there are two or three care centre employees who take care of the greenery and one has taken charge of the gardens. Despite their work, the gardens do require more volunteers than they have presently.

“The commitment to the garden is a couple of hours a day to water, weed, deadhead, and fertilize where necessary,” added Hobbs. “There will be training if the individual or individual requires it, and as with all our volunteers everyone must be screened by the local police.”

Volunteers can choose their job in the garden but she added the hospital is in need of community support in other areas as well.

“Presently, we have around 136 volunteers from 16 community groups including the Health Centre Auxiliary,” said Hobbs “We always need more and at present we are also requiring people for patient visitation and entertainment throughout the facility. Musicians of all sorts and ages are welcome.”

Volunteers can be 13 years of age or older but if a group comes in and responsible adults are in charge, they can be younger, she said.

Hobbs added there will be volunteer training in the coming month in the three communities she is responsible for.

The hospital offers volunteer opportunities in palliative care, as a golden spoon mealtime assistant, as a caring klown, as a Doula (midwife assistant, in bereavement support, drivers, recreation activities, and pet visitation.
