RCMP make huge drug and weapons bust in Red Deer County

One county man in custody after being charged with 62 offences

RED DEER COUNTY – Mounties from several jurisdictions teamed up to arrest a Red Deer County man and two other suspects in connection to the seizure of drugs, weapons and ammunition.

RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said in a news release issued today, Feb. 24 that following a four-month investigation Mounties executed a search warrant on Feb. 3 at England Way in Red Deer County.

The Blackfalds RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) unit led the bust with the assistance of the Innisfail RCMP GIS unit, other Blackfalds RCMP members, Red Deer Alert, Blackfalds Provincial Traffic Section, and RCMP Police Dog Services.

“We are pleased to see a successful outcome to this four-month long investigation," said Blackfalds RCMP Staff Sgt. Dan Martin. “Working in partnership with our surrounding detachments, we were able to make significant arrests, seizing drugs and firearms that would have caused harm to the communities we serve.”

As a result of the search police seized:
 
• 44 grams of suspected fentanyl;

• 11 grams of suspected cocaine;

• nine grams of suspected methamphetamine;

• $4,600 in Canadian currency;

• 10 firearms, two of which were loaded and prohibited; and

• thousands of rounds of ammunition.

 Police have charged Scott Adam Mckay (40), of Red Deer County, with 62 offences including:

 • three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking;

• 11 counts of careless use of a firearm;

• 10 counts of failing to comply with release condition;

• 24 counts of possessing a weapon contrary to order;

• 10 counts of possession of a restricted firearm;

• two counts of possession of a prohibited firearm;

• possession of property obtained by crime; and

• operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited.
 
Mckay was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance.

Jonathan Murray Pears, 31, of Red Deer, has been charged with 23 offences including:
 
• three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking;

• 10 counts of careless use of a firearm;

• eight counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm; and

• two counts of possession of a restricted firearm.
 
Pears was released from custody with his next appearance on March 3 in Red Deer provincial court.

 Kayla Theriault, 34, of no fixed address, has been charged with 24 offences including:

• three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking;

• 11 counts of careless use of a firearm;

• eight counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm; and

• two counts of possession of a restricted firearm.
 
Theriault was released from custody with her next appearance on March 3 in Red Deer provincial court.
