Innisfail peace officers say they haven't been able to find proof of a rumoured cougar near the dog park.

Colin Whymark said he and Ryan Anderson checked out the dog park area on Nov. 2 and Nov. 5 after hearing rumblings about a cougar in the area.

Whymark said they checked the bushes on both sides of the park.

“We covered every inch of it,” he said.

They did find some tracks that they thought probably weren't from a cougar, he said, but just in case, they sent them off to Fish and Wildlife to be checked.

They received confirmation the tracks weren't from a feline.

“They're just nothing more than dog tracks,” he said. “We're pretty convinced there's not (a cougar) in the area.”

If residents do encounter a cougar, however, he advised the public to take precautions like returning to their car.
