INNISFAIL - A charge of manslaughter laid against an Innisfail man after 26-year-old Winston “Drew” Grant died following a confrontation in April 2019 has been stayed, according to Alberta Justice.

Malcolm Nathaniel Bourgeois was scheduled to go to preliminary hearing on April 29.

Police say a confrontation took place outside the Innisfail Hotel on April 24, 2019.

Innisfail RCMP responded to an injured male on the sidewalk at about 10:30 p.m. in the area of 51st Avenue and 49th Street.

Police said the male was transported to hospital by EMS where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police said an autopsy on Grant was conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary on April 26.

Bourgeois was charged the day after the incident and subsequently scheduled for preliminary hearing.

Innisfail RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuck confirmed that the charge has been stayed but could not say why. The file has not yet been closed, he said.

The Red Deer Crown prosecutor office did not immediately return a call seeking further information.
