A male inmate was taken from the Bowden Institution and hospitalized overnight last Monday with non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed and attacked by several other inmates.

Innisfail RCMP was dispatched to the federal penitentiary just after 10 p.m. Feb. 28.

According to police, a lone male inmate was confronted by several other inmates and attacked. Police say he was stabbed with a weapon and, after falling to the ground, was kicked, punched and stabbed additional times.

After the assault, police said the attackers fled the area and the victim managed to walk to a security checkpoint to seek medical assistance.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., correctional officers reported observing an inmate showing visible signs of injury.

Penitentiary officials say staff took immediate action and provided first aid to the victim. He was then transported by ambulance to the hospital.

A day later, the victim remained in hospital in stable condition, reported penitentiary officials.

Following the assault, the institution was placed on general lockdown.

Members of the RCMP canine unit and identification sections attended to assist with the examination and evidence collection.

The investigation continues as a result and until its completion, police say no names are being released.

Inmate visits were cancelled for the duration of the lockdown and the institution was to return to normal routine when the penitentiary’s warden was satisfied that it was safe to do so.
