INNISFAIL - Grade 7-9 classes at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School in Innisfail moved online last week in response to COVID-19 cases, officials said.

The school is one of seven in Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) that shifted to online last week. Classes at all the schools are scheduled to resume in person on Feb. 3.

“As you know the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant continues to pose serious staffing and operational challenges to the education system,” superintendent Kathleen Finnigan said in a Jan. 18 letter to parents.

The surge in the COVID cases has also impacted staffing at RDCRS.

There were a total of 499 absences in the week of Jan. 24-28, including 312 teachers and substitutes and 187 support staff.

Chinook’s Edge School Division will be starting semester 2 on Feb. 1 and all classes in all schools are expected to be in person, officials said Monday.
