The Penhold School of Dance has two great reasons to rejoice this June.

On June 1, the school held its10th anniversary dance recital at Red Deer's Memorial Centre and took possession of its new dance studio in Penhold.

“We held our 10th anniversary recital with 178 students in Red Deer and performed twice to nearly sold-out shows,” said Kirsten Kowalchuk, owner of the Penhold School of Dance. “The hall holds up to 500 people so we were pleased with the turnout.”

Her dance studio will operate out of the Penhold Regional Multiplex until the old Penhold Family Foods building is transformed into two studios, which will improve the studio's offerings to students and families.

“With two studios, we will be able to attract more students, and be more flexible in our scheduling,” said Kowalchuk. “At the multiplex, we were limited in what we could offer and when we could do so. This changes everything about the school of dance.”

She added her performing students range from ages three to 18, and include both males and females in solo, duet and group dances.

“My studio is different in that we don't teach competitive dance, but rather recreational dance,” said Kowalchuk. “We do offer our ballet students the option to take their ballet exams at Joy's School of Dance in Innisfail and we are blessed to be able to do so. It is important for people to realize that recreational dance is taught at the same level as competitive.”

The dance instructor said her summer was going to be busy during the gut and renovation process at the new location.

“There is good parking on the street and in the lot beside the building, and drivers will be able to see the studio from Highway 2A,” said Kowalchuk. “When we finish, it will be a beautiful facility.”
