Property auction upcoming

Four properties could go up for auction in the fall if taxes aren't paid. Council agreed last week to market value reserve bids on four properties because property owners haven't paid their taxes in three years.

The Municipal Government Act allows municipalities to put properties up for auction when a property is in more than three years' arrears.

Heather Whymark, finance manager for Innisfail, said in most cases the taxes are paid out and generally only in some instances does the property go up for auction.

Funding approved for Handi-van

Council agreed to fund clerical work required to run the daily operation of the Handi-van. In a letter presented to council, Legion Manager Richard Black explains that his staff spends an average of three hours a day on van bookings. He asked for $900 a month to subsidize the three hours of daily work at $15 an hour.

“I'm in favour,” said Coun. Tracey walker. “But I think the rates are too low,” she said, suggesting the cost should be discussed with the operations committee.

Currently a one-way trip in town costs $3. To travel to Red Deer or Olds is $35 and Penhold or Bowden is $25.

The yearly expense for the bus costs $40,000 while the revenue is $9,000.

Council agreed the increase should be discussed.

Second block party approved

A second block party was approved this year. A block party toolkit was created two years ago as an outcome of Envision Innisfail and the ACE Community initiative. The purpose was to allow residents the opportunity to build stronger neighbourhoods and improve community safety by developing relationships between neighbours. During council July 6, council approved another one for July 21 along 50 Avenue. The street will be closed from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
