Animal Control Bylaw

Members of council expressed satisfaction with the Animal Control Bylaw as presented by community peace officers at the Nov. 13 council meeting.

“We've been working on it for about a year,” said Mayor Jim Romane, noting it had been massaged a few times over the course of that time period.

Under the bylaw residents of Innisfail can own up to three cats and three dogs. The bylaw also gives peace officers the ability to seize and impound a vicious dog if it shows signs of being dangerous.

Council voted to approve the law unanimously.

Sump Pump Bylaw

Council voted unanimously to adopt a new sump pump bylaw, which updates and strengthens provisions included in other pieces of legislation.

Some residences have the water removal machinery, weeping tile and roof drains hooked directly into the municipal sewer system, and the town is aiming to have this infrastructure updated before hooking up to the regional system.

“I think we have a larger problem than we may think we have,” said Coun. Mark Kemball. “How do you fix it? How do you correct that problem?”

Under the law no sump pump can be constructed with its outflow directed into the sewage system. Mayor Jim Romane received clarification from administration that the bylaw even applies to existing sump pumps.

Spending

The town will conduct a review of gala evening spending, after examining the $3,400 cheque cut to Rhonda Withnell for entertainment.

“We've tried the band thing twice,” said Kemball. “I think maybe that's money we didn't need to spend.”

Other recent expenses included $849 to Randy Fiedler Photography, for website images taken around town and for aerial shots, and $149.82 for a high-tech cellphone case for the fire department.
