The contractor that will carry out upgrades on the interchange of highways 2 and 27 has advised Alberta Transportation that the project has been delayed by other work the company is currently doing.
Andy Hudson, Alberta Transportation's construction manager for Central Alberta, said Carmacks Enterprises, which won the tender for the upgrade project in April, estimates construction should start the week of Aug. 5.
“The last we heard from the contractor doing the work is they've been delayed on another project and they hope to be starting after the long weekend,” Hudson said. “What they wouldn't commit to is exactly when after this (Heritage Day) weekend.”
Carmacks is contracted to construct a new intersection on the east side of the Highway 27 overpass to allow for eastbound traffic on Highway 27 to turn left onto a straight ramp that will lead to the northbound Highway 2 lanes. The construction will also allow travellers headed west on Highway 27 to turn left at a new intersection and merge onto an existing straight ramp into southbound Highway 2 traffic.
Hudson said the only condition that Alberta Transportation puts on contractors is that the work must be done by Oct. 15.
He estimated the work will cost about $2 million and could take about six weeks to complete.
