Olds College international students from Mexico hosted a wonderful event for the community: Theatre Under the Stars.

The event, held July 25 in the wetlands, featured an authentic Mexican dinner, followed by a very funny play: My Big Spicy Mexican Wedding, written and performed by the students.

The 30 engineering students are from Instituto Tecnologico de Toluca, Mexico. They visited Olds College as part of the Proyecta 10,000 program instituted by the government of Mexico.

The Proyecta 10,000 program was developed to assist students in Mexico with their English language skills and to provide them with an opportunity to learn about Canadian culture.

During their time on campus, the students focused on their classes which were heavily centred around vocabulary and verbal interactions in English.

Outside of class, the students took part in a number of trips and activities to learn about Canadian culture, from line dance lessons to a trip to the Rocky Mountains.

“We have gotten to know the campus and the town, and it is very quiet, peaceful and beautiful,” Prisicila Camacho Miranda said. “ The people here are beautiful -- everyone is always smiling.”

"These programs help us internationalize our campus and provide students insight into what it's like to come from another educational system and culture,” said Meghan McKinnie, Olds College director international.

“We appreciate all of the support we have received, both on and off campus."

Following the theatre performance, college officials presented the students with their certificates of completion.
