DIDSBURY - The University of Lethbridge's Global Drums ensemble played a well received concert on May 3 at Didsbury High School (DHS).
Also performing at the sold-out show were the DHS symphonic winds and the Grade 9 band. The concert was put on by the Mountain View Arts Society.
DHS band teacher Kirk Wassmer said it was a fantastic concert.
"Global Drums brought everything from Polynesian drumming to Japanese taiko to the steel pans," said Wassmer. "Their program was incredibly musical, energetic and definitely entertaining."
Wassmer said several of the local students were able to participate in a workshop with the Global Drums director Adam Mason in the afternoon and perform with the group later that night at the concert.
Former DHS student and band member Evan Svendsen plays with the Global Drums group and enjoyed performing at home in front of friends and family.
"It was fantastic and very well received by the community," said Svendsen. "Almost half the audience was at their first Global Drums concert and will most likely be hooked now. I talked with several students from the DHS band who are already considering the University of Lethbridge as an option for post-secondary. The visit by Global Drums certainly inspired many."
Svendsen said it was great fun playing in front of the town three years after graduating from DHS.
"I was very thrilled to be given the opportunity to present Adam Mason, director of the Global Drums, with a thank-you gift autographed by members of the DHS band and all the Global Drums musicians," he said.
