DIDSBURY - Five members of Dawn’s School of Dance in Didsbury have been selected as part of the cast of the Alberta Ballet’s 2022 production of The Nutcracker.

The ballet runs Dec. 16-24 in Calgary at the Jubilee Auditorium. There are 120 performers in this year’s production.

The local dancers are Jordan Cowan, Hailey Barker, Lorelai Williams, Olivia Halverson and London Williams.

All the local dancers will be performing in the Battle Scene, with Jordan as a Cossack Rat and the other four as soldiers. Rehearsals are already underway.

“I am very excited and it’s a great experience,” said Jordan, 14. “It’s lots of work and a lot of fun. We have to show up pretty early to the rehearsals and they are about two hours long.

“We practise with a whole bunch of different dancers and eventually we will practise with the professionals.”

Asked if she is nervous about appearing on such a large stage, she replied, “I’m a little nervous but not really. I’ve been on some pretty big stages before, like the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, along with lots of other girls too.”

Jordan has been dancing since she was two or three years old.

All five local dancers are supporting and helping each other through their collective Nutcracker experience, she said.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker debuted in 1892.
