DIDSBURY - Council has approved the design of a mural project that will see a basketball court near the museum receive an original painting.

The go-ahead came during last week’s council meeting after council approved the project itself in Aug. 2022.

The Zion Youth Group is spearheading the project, which will see the town provide paint for the initiative. Located on 20th Avenue just west of the museum, the mural will cover the entire playing surface.

Professional artist Geoff Gouveia will paint the mural with help from youth group members and others.

The approved design is a basketball player with a moose head and a human body. Didsbury is well known for its moose population.

As well as approving the design, council also carried a second motion allocating $2,000 for paint, with the funds coming out of the Parks 2023 budget.

“We are certainly excited about this project,” said mayor Rhonda Hunter. “It is an interesting undertaking.”

A date for the actual painting to get underway has not been set.

“They are going to keep everybody posted about the date and time and how the community can participate,” she said.
