CREMONA - Autumn Schmidt has won the byelection in the Village of Cremona, defeating three other council candidates in the Feb. 6 vote.

The byelection was held to replace outgoing first-term councillor Terry Thompson.

Schmidt garnered 51 votes, with other candidates Derald Anderson garnering 15, Matthew Barnett garnering 14, and Cindy Sangster garnering 12.

Schmidt will be sworn in at the Feb. 20 council meeting.

Thompson resigned in October, making him the second Village of Cremona councillor to resign in 2023.

Councillor Joseph Shi resigned in March, with Jody Shane Dick winning the subsequent byelection on June 12, defeating three other candidates.

Cremona chief administrative officer Karen O’Conner was the returning officer for the Feb. 6 byelection.
