Victim of deadly road rage incident in NE Calgary identified

The altercation is believed to have stemmed from a non-injury hit-and-run collision that occurred between the two vehicles shortly before the call was made to 9-1-1.
An investigation by Cochrane RCMP and Calgary Police Service determined threats posted online were unsubstantiated.
Police received a call from a passenger, who reported they were involved in an on-going road rage incident.

Thirty-five year old David Mervin Berglund of Calgary was identified as the victim of a road rage incident that occured on Dec. 12.

An autopsy was completed on Dec. 13 by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at approximately 12:30 p.m., police received a call from a passenger who was riding in a red 2004 Chevrolet Aveo, who reported they were involved in an on-going road rage incident while travelling around several roads in the northeast.

At the time, a 2002 GMC Sierra was reported to be driving erratic and swerving in and out of traffic, and it is alleged the driver flashed a knife towards the occupants of the Chevrolet Aveo.

The altercation is believed to have stemmed from a non-injury hit-and-run collision that occurred between the two vehicles shortly before the call was made to 9-1-1.

While on the phone with Calgary 9-1-1 dispatchers, the occupants of the Chevrolet Aveo were directed to disengage with the driver of the GMC Sierra, but they continued to follow the vehicle.

The altercation continued to escalate, and the driver of the GMC Sierra pulled over and exited his vehicle in the 6900 block of Temple Drive N.E.

A short time later, the Chevrolet Aveo drove past the driver of the GMC Sierra, and it is believed he kicked the passenger-side of the vehicle.

The Chevrolet Aveo then stopped and reversed into the driver of the GMC Sierra, who was then struck and pushed into a nearby tree. As a result, the driver of the GMC Sierra sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver and the passenger were immediately taken into custody.

As a result, the driver of the Chevrolet Aveo, Steven Allen, 34, of Calgary, has been charged with manslaughter.

He will next appear in court on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024.

The passenger was released without charges.
