Emergency Alert

An air quality emergency alert was sent out shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday for an area located south of Vermilion.

"This alert is in effect for everyone in the area between Hwy 41 and Hwy 870, south of Vermillion or Innisfree, and north of Wainright," according to information from the Government of Alberta.

The cause of the alert is due to "an out of control fire at an oil lease site located 23 km southeast of wwwMannville. Crude oil is burning, and toxic smoke is being produced. The smoke is dangerous if inhaled."

Residents have been told to "shelter in place immediately. Go inside and close all windows and doors. If driving, close windows and vents and leave the area," reads the alert.

No evacuations had taken place as of 5:17 p.m., but residents in the area were being told to prepare clothes, documents, and medications in case an evacuation is needed.
