Police resolve incident at Okotoks Village trailer park

One man taken into custody and another injured following an incident with a pellet gun in Okotoks, south of Calgary.

OKOTOKS, Alta — Police have resolved a situation after being dispatched to a suspected shooting in Okotoks Friday afternoon.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on June 3, reports came in of a person having been shot with an unknown weapon in the Okotoks Village trailer park.

“Initially we got a call about an active shooter in the community, specifically into the trailer park area,” said Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randhawa. “Members were immediately dispatched to the scene, where we tried to acquire as much information as we could and learned there was one victim as well that was bleeding.”

Arriving in minutes, RCMP members in heavy ballistic armour bearing C8 carbine rifles cordoned off an area around a portion of Heritage Drive in the trailer park.

They learned the suspected shooter had gone back into the house, Randhawa continued.

“The victim was on the back deck, bleeding and requiring medical assistance,” he said, adding EMS was dispatched, in addition to RCMP Police Dog Services and Emergency Response Team.

“We learned the victim was shot with a pellet gun, not an actual gun, and immediately he was given medical attention,” Randhawa said. “(RCMP) members surrounded the area and spoke with the shooter, who came out and surrendered himself. He is in custody right now.”

One Okotoks Village resident, Elaine Pacan, was watching television in her home across the street from the incident when she heard the commotion.

“I was sitting in there watching Dr. Pol with my mother and we paused it and I just hear a bullhorn going ‘Get down on the ground,’” Pacon said. “I look out the window and there’s cop cars out here and I see rifles and people in handcuffs.”

A statement released by Okotoks RCMP following the incident states it's alleged two adult males were arguing and the suspect allegedly fired a round from a pellet gun, striking the victim in the upper chest.

The victim was treated at the scene by EMS for minor injuries, the statement read, and the two men were known to each other.

No other members of the public or RCMP members were injured during the incident, and there is no danger to the public at this time.
