WESTLOCK – Two men caught piloting their vehicles more than 60 km/h over the posted limit on Highway 44 each face massive fines, while one has also been banned from driving for a week.

In Westlock Court of Justice Aug. 2, agent Patricia Sibanyoni entered a guilty plea to speeding on behalf of Patrick Perry Sidney Rehn who was caught travelling at 163 km/h on Highway 44 at 9:04 a.m., Nov. 7, 2021, in the MD of Lesser Slave River.

Justice Thomas Achtymichuk acquiesced to the joint-sentence submission from provincial Crown Shelia Ries and Sibanyoni on the $1,000 fine, which includes the victim-fine surcharge, plus a seven-day driving prohibition — although Rehn wasn’t in court, the ban started immediately.

“Normally the person would be here so he would hand in his licence … so, it’s starts today, and Mr. Rehn is required to turn in his driver’s licence to a registry (office),” said Justice Achtymichuk.

Although Sibanyoni had asked for a year to pay the fine, Justice Achtymichuk gave Rehn until March 29, 2024 — if he doesn’t pay it by the then, he’ll spend eight days in jail.

Second speeder

Christian Bryan George Robichaud also faces a $1,000 fine for speeding after he was caught at 8:11 p.m., April 23, 2023, travelling at 161 km/h on Highway 44 in Westlock County.

“Mr. Robichaud has a clean driving record and this was an anomaly for him,” said Ries following Robichaud’s guilty plea.

Justice Achtymichuk gave Robichaud until March 31, 2024, to pay the fine or he will spend eight days in jail.

“Pay $50, $100, it doesn’t matter. Pay whatever you can, whenever you can. If you get to the end of your time you can apply in writing to get more time, but the judge is going to look to see if you’ve been paying it off,” Justice Achtymichuk told Robichaud.
