High River Fire called to trapped tubers on Highwood

Responders were called to the banks of the Highwood River by RCMP members after two people were found stranded in the water on the west side of town.

HIGH RIVER - Two people have been rescued on the Highwood River Friday afternoon.

The High River Fire Department and EMS were called to the banks of the Highwood River on June 16 by RCMP members after two people were found stranded in the water on the west side of town.

"We got called for two individuals that were trapped on a tree, just southwest of town on the river," said High River Fire Chief Cody Zebedee.

Both were freed from the tree on the river with the assistance of a community member on a boat and assessed by EMS.

The incident highlights a need for caution while enjoying the waterways, the chief said.

"The river is very unpredictable; where you were last year may be very different from what it's like this year," Zebedee explained.

"You know, lots of trees that come down that are along the riverbanks and erosion, different things like that.

"We do have a lot of snags throughout the river, and so it's just a reminder to people to stay clear, wear life jackets (PFDs), have a plan and make sure they're prepared when they go out and somebody knows where they're at."
