Four charged almost a year after body discovered east of Okotoks

Four people have been charged, including one with first degree murder, after a woman’s body was found near a highway east of Okotoks last March.

Four people have now been charged in connection to a murder after a woman’s body was found near a highway east of Okotoks last spring. 

On March 30, 2023, the body of 37-year-old Calgary resident Tara Miller was found near Highway 552 and 128 Street East in Foothills County. The cause of death was found to be homicide and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation. 

On Jan. 18, 2024, three Calgary residents and a man from Wheatland County were arrested in connection to the murder by the Major Crimes Unit, with assistance from the Calgary Police Service and RCMP Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit. 

Gurpreet Gill, 30, of Calgary, has been charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault and using a firearm in an indictable offence. 

Gill was remanded into custody and will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Jan. 22. 

Three others were charged with manslaughter and other offences. 

Greg Schuster, 30, has been charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and accessory after the fact. 

Schuster was remanded into custody and will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Feb. 1. 

Shyana Popplestone, 25, has been charged with manslaughter and will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Jan. 26. 

Jared Burke, 24, of Wheatland County, has been charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and using a firearm in an indictable offence.
