OLDS - Alberta RCMP have issued a travel advisory for Highway 2 due a truck and passenger vehicle convoy travelling to the legislature in Edmonton protesting COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions.

Travel in the northbound lanes from Didsbury to Edmonton will have heavy congestion and slow moving traffic throughout the day, states the advisory.

"It is anticipated this will move to the southbound lanes of Highway 2 south of Edmonton this evening."

Semis, gravel trucks, passenger vehicles and others stopped at a muster point for the convoy at the Westview Co-op near the intersection of Highway 27 east of Olds and Highway 2 this morning.

About 20 semis and gravel trucks along with a variety of passenger vehicles left Sundre this morning and headed east on Highway 27 to join others travelling from the south and east meeting at the muster point.

The contingent left the Co-op at about 8:40 this morning, Jan. 29.

Similar contingents were to join the convoy from the Penhold area, Ponoka and Leduc.

Others rallied from south of Calgary earlier in the morning to make the trip to Edmonton.

The Alberta convoy was organized in support of Freedom Convoy 2022 which is in Ottawa today protesting at Parliament.

Originally started in protest of vaccine mandates and restrictions for truckers, the Freedom Convoy 2022 movement has grown to include support for mandates for everyone to be lifted.
