OLDS — Brett and April Mattson, who live just west of Olds, have won the 2021 edition of the Kiwanis Club of Olds 50/50 cash raffle fundraiser. They received $5,500.

The draw, undertaken via the online Rafflebox platform due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, was held from early May until June 6. The draw was held June 8.

Money raised goes to the Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society (MVESS).

The MVESS provides outreach services to people suffering from domestic violence and related issues. It wants to build an emergency shelter next year in order to provide a safe haven for people fleeing abuse.

“We’re very surprised and shocked to have won. We’re not really sure yet what we’re going to do with the money, to be honest. It’s still a shock,” April said after receiving the cheque.

She said she and Brett decided to buy tickets for the draw after seeing an ad for it.

“I just thought it was a really great cause and something that’s really needed in our community,” she said.
