OLDS — Nine people have now filed papers to run for a seat on Olds town council during the Oct. 18 municipal election.

Former councillor Harvey Walsh is the latest to do so, according to the Town of Olds website on Sept. 8.

There are seven positions on council: six for councillors and one for mayor. Successful candidates will serve on council for a four-year term.

Walsh served on council for 16 years but lost his bid for re-election during the 2017 municipal election.

He joins six other people running for councillor.

They include Darren Wilson, James Cummings and Lucinda Watkins, all of whom are vying for their first term on council. Wilson ran unsuccessfully for a council seat during a byelection, held Jan. 20, 2020.

Three incumbents are running to get back on town council again.

They are Wanda Blatz and Heather Ryan, who won their seats during the 2017 election; and Mary Anne Overwater, who is completing her second term on council, having been elected during the 2013 election.

Two people are running for mayor: incumbent Michael Muzychka and former mayor Judy Dahl.

Muzychka won the job during the 2017 election when Dahl initially filed nomination papers but withdrew after Muzychka stepped forward to run for that position.

Dahl served the community as mayor for 13 years. Before becoming mayor, she was a town employee in the 1990s.

Those wishing to run for a seat on town council have until 12 noon on Sept. 20 to file their nomination papers.

The period for candidates to withdraw from the race is from 12 noon on Sept. 20 to 12 noon on Sept. 21.
