SUNDRE — Residents might catch a glimpse of some CH-146 Griffon helicopters conducting exercises in the region over the next couple of days.

The Royal Canadian Air Force’s 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, whose primary function is to provide support to the Canadian Army and other government departments, will be training in Ram Falls and the surrounding area starting later today (July 9) and flying back to base on July 11.

The exercise follows up on training conducted in the same area earlier in June, with further training scheduled to take place July 23-25 as well as later in August, according to a joint press release issued by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces.

The squadron, which has seen overseas deployment as well as provided assistance at home during times of emergencies such as the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, is carrying out mountain flying operational training.

“Members of the public can expect to see three CH-146 Griffon helicopters operating from Ram Falls air strip, flying as far north as Nordegg, as far south as Sundre, just west of Rocky Mountain House, and into British Columbia's Donald area,” reads a portion of the release.

“Approximately 20 members of the squadron will be accompanied by two military-patterned vehicles travelling by road. No firearms will be used by personnel, aircraft or vehicles.”

The unit is based out of Canadian Forces Base Edmonton and has the primary role of supporting units of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group as well as Joint Task Force (West).
