SUNDRE - The councillor appointed deputy mayor announced her decision to step down from the position this month and sought a council motion recognizing the request.

“I am resigning from my appointment as deputy mayor effective immediately,” said Coun. Cheri Funke, asking council to amend a prior motion carried on Oct. 21 during the organizational meeting, by removing her name from the list and that the next councillor on the list be appointed in her place.

Coun. Todd Dalke motioned to that effect, with a brief discussion following during the council meeting in early December.

Mayor Terry Leslie wanted to confirm that Dalke, whose name was next on the list of deputy mayor appointments, was agreeable to accepting the position, which the councillor confirmed.

Coun. Rob Wolfe inquired what prompted Funke’s decision.

“Can I ask for reasons, or is this something we need to go in camera for?” asked Wolfe.

“This is a personal matter; I am not comfortable discussing this. There’s also ethical reasons related to the council code of conduct that prevent me from discussing it in public,” said Funke.

Dalke’s motion carried unanimously.
