SUNDRE — Registration for the local minor hockey association got underway earlier this month.

“It opened May 1,” said Amber Jenkins, Sundre Minor Hockey Association vice-president, adding it’s open to players aged four to 17.

Registration will run throughout the summer, wrapping up on Aug. 15, Jenkins added.

“After that, there’s a $200 late fee,” she said.

With the snow pack in the mountains yet to fully melt and summer more than a month away, next winter might still seem far away in people’s minds.

But the association needs that time to prepare for the coming season and get an idea for how all of the teams will shape up, Jenkins said.

“We start planning early to see what the numbers look like,” she said.

Additionally, she said starting registration in the spring offers a wide window of opportunity to help families cover the cost.

“You don’t have to pay it all at once — there’s a payment plan. It would spread out over a few months,” she said.

“So, it gives the parents time to financially plan for it.”

Provided everything falls into place, the association anticipates having teams on the ice before the end of September, she said, adding the municipality is expected to have the ice surface ready at the Sundre arena by then, courtesy of the new plant.

The association also recently held its annual general meeting in mid-April, when a largely new executive was elected.

The board is as follows: Tim Kennedy, president; Amber Jenkins, vice-president; Tina Cook, secretary; Lisa O'Brien, treasurer; Megan Elsliger, league director; Nathan McCullough, Central Alberta Hockey League governor; Stacey Johnson, registrar; Stacey Gillan, equipment manager; Shealy Wanner, fundraising director ; and Karen Rosevear, Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis Commission coordinator. The following positions remain vacant: coach coordinator, referee and chief, as well as safety coordinator.

Email Stacey Johnson at [email protected] for registration information, or contact Jenkins by email at [email protected] to volunteer as a referee or a coach.
