Over the coming weeks, Albertans can expect to see and hear a public education campaign featuring the new Alberta Emergency Alert on television, in movie theatres and on participating radio stations.

The campaign, called “Stop, Listen and Respond,” will help Albertans recognize the new alert so they know what to expect and how to respond when an emergency occurs in their community.

“The new Alberta Emergency Alert gives authorized users like municipalities the ability to get critical information to their residents in the event of an emergency or disaster,” said Hector Goudreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “This campaign supports municipalities and our public safety partners by letting residents know what to do when they hear an alert and reinforces our overall goal to encourage more Albertans to prepare for an emergency.”

Alberta Emergency Alert is based on a digital signal that is distributed through radio and television, and a website with alerts distributed through social media. The new alerting system also has more types of alerts, including critical alerts for imminent, life-threatening danger and information alerts to warn people of developing situations and how to prepare for them.

The Alberta Emergency Alert system is operated by the Government of Alberta through the Alberta Emergency Management Agency on behalf of authorized users such as municipalities, police, emergency response organizations and other government partners to enhance public safety.

Current alerts are posted at www.emergencyalert.alberta.ca and on the Alberta Emergency Alert Facebook and Twitter page. The advertisements can be viewed on the Facebook page.

The Alberta government is working to build a better Alberta by fostering economic growth, strengthening our health and education systems, investing in infrastructure, supporting safe and strong communities and ensuring a clean and healthy environment.
