Pioneer growing season claim disputed

Re: ìFresh produce was scarce on the frontierî (A Prairie Footnote, Sept. 6).I question the claim that Alexander (Henry the Younger) made about further northern posts faring poorly.

I was raised at Goldfields, Lake Athabasca, and in the 1930s we had a good crop of vegetables from our family plot.To be sure, the growing season is shorter there than on the Red River. However, the total hours of sunshine is much greater and it is sunshine that determines the growing season.I also witnessed several very fruitful gardens at Uranium City in the 1950s.Frederick PeitzscheInnisfail
