Mar ready to take the helm

I would like to express my appreciation to all Albertans who cast a ballot in the Progressive Conservative leadership election on Sept. 17. While voter turnout was lower than some expected, the direction of voters was definitive.

I would like to express my appreciation to all Albertans who cast a ballot in the Progressive Conservative leadership election on Sept. 17. While voter turnout was lower than some expected, the direction of voters was definitive. The subsequent endorsement by three of the candidates for front runner, Gary Mar, further emphasizes the clear direction of Albertans with regard to leadership. The PC Party's constitutional requirement for a leader to be declared by winning 50% plus one of participating voters' means members are being asked to vote again on Oct. 1. As vote counts are not carried forward, the outcome will be decided by participants on Oct. 1. The outcome should not be taken for granted.Alberta's economic dependence on trade and access to foreign markets, as well as recent headlines questioning the integrity of Alberta oil, highlight the need for strong and experienced leadership from our new premier. Having served in portfolios of international and inter-governmental affairs, environment, health, education and community development, Gary Mar is ready to take the lead. The good work and strong relationships Gary has established internationally over the last three years as Alberta's envoy to Washington will be important.I encourage all Albertans to support Gary's bid for leadership on Oct. 1 or at an advance poll on Sept. 27.Arno DoerksenMLA Strathmore-Brooks
