Letter: Local teacher accuses premier of not supporting educators

opinion

Why do you hate teachers and public schools so much?

You are defunding the public school system by cutting funding to public schools and diverting money to private schools.

You are planning to make changes to our pension fund without consulting teachers (incidentally, I contributed more than half the money in my pension).

Your government is making wild and unsubstantiated claims about student achievement, or lack of it, in spite of the fact that students perform very well on international tests.

You are claiming, again without any proof, that Alberta students are being radicalized in school. Students are taught critical thinking and how to form their own opinions. That is a far cry from being “radicalized." The K to 12 curriculum that is currently used in schools was designed under a Conservative government. Have you read it?

You cut funding to reduce class sizes, also eliminating the requirement for school boards to report class sizes. Research consistently shows that students do better in smaller classes but your government is making it harder for people to know when class sizes are becoming unmanageable.

When teachers politely and respectfully asked questions in your public Facebook forum, they were blocked.

I have been a teacher for many years. Like many of my colleagues I take great pride in my profession and have worked hard to give my students the best education possible. We work long hours and often spend our own money to make learning fun, interesting and meaningful for our students. We are often bringing food and clothing to school for students whose families are struggling. We are often there for them when no one else can be. I’m not complaining. It has been a privilege to work with kids; to see them learn, grow in confidence and find their wings.

However, I really do wonder why you feel the need to attack us, rather than support us in the important work we do. Please explain. I am finding it all very baffling.

Jackie Moorhouse,
