As Yogi Berra once said, “It’s like déjà vu all over again": Innisfail’s Glen Carritt disregards provincial government regulations.

At a protest in front of a barbershop in Innisfail on Tuesday, Jan. 12, Mr. Glen Carritt confidently expressed his views on why a hair salon has the right to go against a provincial government law.

According to Mr. Carritt, giving support and encouragement to business owners to go against government rules does not link him to advocating lawlessness. This is remarkable.

As Carritt is heard saying on Calgary CTV News, “I wasn’t condoning anything illegal, but I do support their choice to make a choice for them to survive and create a livelihood.”

As painful as it is, if you want to watch, it is on CTV’s website.

Once again, “mayor-to-be” Mr. Glen Carritt is letting everyone know that the law is not important. If his plan works, he will be the mayor of Innisfail this autumn and, sadly, Innisfail will have a mayor who does not respect the rule of law.

When Mr. Carritt makes a statement that clearly identifies his alignment with, and support of, people who are breaking a law, how can he say that he “wasn’t condoning anything illegal”?

On this point alone, I think we must stop and ask ourselves: does this individual understand the meaning of the words that come out of his mouth?

I’m not writing this letter to be cruel. I am writing this letter because I am concerned and afraid.

Concerned because, given the current political environment, we all know that anything can happen.

I’m afraid because, generally, it seems that the average citizen is struggling to critically assess opinions they are exposed to in the media. And, as we have seen with the Trump debacle in the United States, people are susceptible to falling victim to the negatives associated with misinformation.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I am afraid that this person, Mr. Glen Carritt, will, one day, hold the position of mayor of Innisfail. My mayor.

What more can I say?

Except, please listen to, and follow, the recommendations of your provincial and federal health professionals. Be a law-abiding citizen, and do not listen to, or follow the advice of, Mr. Glen Carritt when he says that breaking a government regulation is not illegal.

Bruce Madore,

Innisfail
