Letter: Give our leaders some guidance

What do we expect life to look like once the majority of people have been vaccinated?
opinion

Recently, a COVID-19 outbreak was declared at Aspen Ridge Lodge (ARL), precipitating full outbreak protocols, including the increased use of personal protective equipment (PPE), meaning not only masks and face shields but gowns and gloves as well.

My mother is a resident here. The residents of ARL received their two COVID-19 vaccinations, one on Jan. 13 and the second on Feb. 10.

My question is this: What use is the COVID-19 vaccination if no restrictions are lifted?

How long can our elders, let alone the whole of our society and our economy, continue to exist under restrictions that stifle the life we once lived?

I have no doubt that my mother will decline in the next 28 days minimum that these reinforced protocols are in effect. If I came there in full PPE she would have no clue who I was and would be frustrated and fearful.

Human beings need faces, they need smiles and hugs and kisses. To keep our elders from this most basic human contact is, in my opinion, inhumane.

I respect that Mountain View Seniors' Housing, which manages ARL, is merely following direction from the Ministry of Health, whom I have contacted in this regard as well.

My question is directed not only to these bodies, but to citizens in general: What do we expect life to look like once the majority of people have been vaccinated? Perhaps we need to think about this now and to give our leaders some guidance.
