How many people, in Olds, now believe their neighbour is doing something illegal?

Re: Olds council pecks away at chicken-raising rules

In the article, Town of Olds councillor (Mary Jane) Harper is quoted as saying, “I know we already have a few illegal urban chicken places out there.”

I realize I don’t have the context of the statement and am trusting it was reported correctly.

Assuming the statement, as reported, expressed her understanding of the current situation regarding urban chickens in Olds, I believe councillor Harper owes an apology to those she implied are acting illegally.

There are no ‘illegal urban chicken places’ in Olds; raising chickens is not currently regulated in the Town of Olds.

Considering her experience on council and the input from town departments I am surprised that she would make such a statement.

This statement, from a town councillor, carries weight and has a recognizable negative impact on those it labels.

How many people, in Olds, now believe their neighbour is doing something illegal?

As this statement was made in an open council meeting and reported in the media, I believe an explanation of the correct fact and an apology should be made that can correct misconceptions now in the public.

It should also be made very soon so those interested in the current debate on the issue will have the correct information.

Bruce Woodruff,

Olds
