Letter: All about diverting attention

Re: Commentary: Accountability best for all

The author of that commentary supports Education Minister LaGrange’s legislation entitled The Student First Act. He claims such legislation will protect students from unscrupulous educators.

Why does the education minister proposes this new law?

How about the tactic of diverting attention from the conduct of Mr. Kenney, caught lying about his drinking and eating atop the federal meeting in spite of COVID-19 restrictions?

How about diverting attention from ex-cabinet minister Devin Dreeshen drinking on the job and also for (allegedly) abusing his staff while intoxicated? In the “real world”, such a person would have been fired, but he gets to keep his MLA’s salary and perks.

How about diverting attention from the “behind closed door” deals with the mining companies in the beautiful mountains of Alberta, despite opposition from farmers, ranchers, environmentalists, and tourists? How about the sale of Crown land to private developers?

How about diverting attention from the Education minister herself since she proposed a curriculum that was condemned by the teachers?

How about diverting attention from Mr. Kenney for mishandling the responses to the COVID-19 pandemic: “We’re open for business."

How about diverting attention from the “war room”, a new bureaucracy, which cost the taxpayers $30 million, plus a yearly salary of $190,000, despite the fact the government already has three cabinet ministers who deal with the energy sector, environment, and agriculture/forestry, and despite the fact that the energy sector spends millions promoting the merits of  oil and gas, but never any negative aspects of the natural resource industries on the environment, and Mr. Kenney doesn’t mind billionaires like Charles Koch, with over $50 billion in personal wealth, attacking anyone who is in favour of protecting the environment?

How about passing legislation protecting taxpayers from incompetent, wasteful spending politicians? What ever happened to the Alberta Heritage Trust Fund?

If Mr. Kenney is so sure of himself in promoting direct democracy, ie: election of senators, daylight savings and transfer payments, how about having referendums on private schools?

On supporting private health a at the expense of public health care? On establishing a provincial police force (most municipalities support the RCMP)? On the creation of a provincial pension system to supplant Canada Pension Plan and Olds Age Security? How about American-type gun legislation, permitting concealed weapons; sale of military weapons such as assault rifles?

Yes, Ms. LaGrange does support this piece of legislation to divert attention away from the many negative aspects of Mr. Kenney’s government.
