The death of dozens of Canadians in a jet crash in Iran on Jan. 8 is a tragedy for the victims’ families and a great loss for the nation.

And with many Albertans of Iranian origin among the dead, it is also a terrible event for this province.

Whether all the underlying causes of the deadly crash will quickly be determined in light of international tensions in the Middle East remains anyone’s guess.

What is known is that the provincial and federal governments should and must press for answers – anything less than uncovering the complete facts about this tragedy should not be an option.

For his part, Premier Jason Kenney speaks well for the province when he calls the loss of so many promising Albertans and Canadians a great and horrific loss.

“Alberta has been enriched by a small but dynamic and highly educated Iranian community,” said Kenney. “This is a terrible day for them, and I am sure that all Albertans join with me in expressing our condolences to the entire community, which is affected by this tragedy.

“On behalf of the government of Alberta, I extend my deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the passengers.”

Kenney is calling on the federal government to ensure answers about the crash come to light.

For his part, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government is committed to getting those answers.

“Our focus is on the many, many families who are grieving, and our focus in the days and weeks to come will be on answering the questions that they have and that, indeed, we all have as to how this happened,” said Trudeau.

“Our government will continue to work closely with its international partners to ensure that this crash is thoroughly investigated.”

While it is true that Iran is thousands of kilometres from Canada that in no way should lessen the resolve and determination of MLAs and MPs to seek and find answers to this terrible tragedy. Anything less would be wholly unacceptable to Alberta and to Canada.
