OLDS – Police have made two arrests involving stolen property in separate incidents in Olds.

On the evening of Dec. 3 members of the Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit located a male driving a vehicle with a stolen licence plate, police said in a release Thursday.

A 45-year-old Olds man was arrested at the scene for possession of stolen property and several outstanding warrants.

While in custody at the Olds RCMP detachment, the man was recognized as a person who had allegedly given police a false name following a Sept. 14 arrest in Olds.

“Members of the Olds detachment police mountain bike patrol had stopped (the accused) for a traffic violation and he provided them with false identification,” RCMP said in the release.

“He was observed to be in possession of a taser-style weapon and, upon his arrest, was also found in possession of what was believed to be methamphetamine.”

Under the false name, he was released with a promise to appear in court on Oct. 7. He did not appear in court and an arrest warrant was issued.

The accused has now been charged under his real name in relation to that incident with an additional charge of obstructing a peace officer.

Charles Benson Schmidt, 45, of Olds has been released and is scheduled to appear in Didsbury provincial court on Dec. 24.

In a separate case, early on Thursday morning Olds RCMP officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a suspicious Dodge Ram truck when the vehicle fled the scene.

Officers managed to locate the vehicle a short time later and the driver was arrested.

Police determined that the vehicle was stolen earlier from the Sundre area.

A 37-year-old Olds man, who has not been named, is facing charges including being in possession of stolen property. He is scheduled to be in Didsbury provincial court on Jan. 6.
