Mayor Judy Dahl unveiled the Town of Olds' new flag at council's priorities and policies meeting last Monday.

The flag shows the new logo, which was designed by the Edmonton firm McRobbie Optamedia. The idea for a new logo came out of a rebranding exercise the town undertook last spring, which was Phase I of the Promoting Olds project.

"One of the aims of the rebranding was to modernize the town logo, while creating a parallel current logo that was created by the community as a whole,î said Dahl.

"The rebranding exercise is Phase 1, out of three phases, included the flag.î

McInnis said the final cost of the branding came in under the $40,000 budget at $39,000, a low figure, considering the 22 responses received from the request for proposals for Phase I ranged from $35,000 to $107,000.

The new logo will gradually be introduced on all types of applications. Letterhead and name tags were changed over first, followed by the town flag. Town administration hopes to get new magnets for town cars this year.

According to a handout provided by Dahl, the "Oî shape represents the relationship between the town and the community, as well as future and fearlessness. The blue, yellow and green colour scheme portrays the community's energy and vibrancy, in addition to its various facets.

"The yellow that flows into the blue indicates the geographic location. The shades of yellow pay tribute to the agriculture history,î said Dahl.

"The shades of blue reflect technology and innovation, while the shades of green recognize the significance of the environment.î

The new flag will soon replace the old one at the town office. The flag will also be sold at the town office.

"There are a lot of people in town that have flagpoles,î said Dahl.

"I would certainly like to leave it open that if they wanted to purchase a Town of Olds flag, they would be more than welcome to do that.î

Promoting Olds will continue in 2012, with Phase II consisting of the Town of Olds developing and implementing a new, comprehensive communications strategy. Once Phase II is over, RFPs will be sent for Phase III, which calls for a redesign of the town website. Town council has earmarked $70,000 in the 2012 budget for Phase III.
