OLDS — RCMP members are asking for the public's help in regard to a suspicious person spotted in a wooded area of Olds who is believed to have been carrying a rifle.

Olds RCMP received a complaint about the suspect just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20. The suspect was seen in a wooded area between Briegel Road and 63rd Avenue.

“A child was at home watching a movie when she reported to her father that she had looked out a window and saw a person carrying a rifle behind their house near the wooded trails,” Staff Sgt. Jim MacDonald said in an email.

“The child described the person as wearing all black clothing, including a black jacket with a large hood and that the person was about 5'4" to 5'6" tall. She lost sight of the person as he walked along the tree line and trails away from their house.”

Police immediately responded and conducted an extensive search of the area by vehicle and foot patrols.

However, MacDonald said they didn’t find anyone fitting that description and people walking the trails at the time had not seen any such person either.

As a result, “there appears to be no risk to the public at this time,” MacDonald wrote.

However, if anyone has any knowledge of the incident or observed other activity that raises concern, MacDonald urges them to contact Olds RCMP at 403-556-3323.

The public can also contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the P3 Tips app, which is available through the Apple App or Google Play store.
