OLDS — There will soon be more things to see, find and use at the Olds Olds Municipal Library (OML), now that it is expanding its Library of Things.

Since 2012 via the Library of Things, OML patrons have had access to a wide range of non-traditional items besides books.

For example, residents have had access to telescopes, power monitors, tablets, and other technology-based resources.

Demand for those “things” has been so strong that library staff decided to expand what it contained. The first phase of that expansion will occur through community donations.

The expanded Library of Things is envisioned to include:

• Kitchen appliances, ranging from slow cookers and blenders to bread makers and dehydrators.

• Outdoor fun items such as pickleball kits, disc golf sets, bird watching kits, telescopes and science kits. An OML news release says that will enable patrons to “explore the natural beauty of the Olds area and engage in exciting outdoor activities.”

• Do-it-yourself tools such as circular saws, laser levels and car jump starter boxes. That would enable residents to “take on various DIY projects, home repairs, and renovations without the need for costly purchases,” the news release said.

• Music-related inventory, including ukulele kits, speakers and microphones.

• Items for hobbyists and artisans such as cricut cutters (digital die cutting machines for crafts), sewing machines, and wood burning kits.

• Technological gadgets, including gaming systems, drones, ring lights and digital cameras. These items would enable patrons to “delve into new experiences and capture memorable moments,” the news release said.

“The Olds Municipal Library remains committed to its mission of fostering learning, curiosity, and community engagement," the release added.

“By expanding the Library of Things, the library continues to break barriers and redefine the traditional library experience, catering to the evolving needs and interests of its diverse community.”

Olds Municipal Library manager Lesley Moody said the library is “thrilled” to endeavour to add to the Library of Things, as it has “become an integral part of our commitment to offering unique and valuable resources to the community."

"With this expansion, we aim to empower our patrons with a broader range of items that can enhance their daily lives and encourage creativity," she added.

If you’re interested in helping support the Library of Things expansion by donating money or items for it, contact Moody.

“We ask that you do not just drop off items, as we have specific requirements and needs for the safety and success of the program,” she said.
