Wade Bearchell is no longer an Olds municipal councillor.

He resigned on Oct. 21, effective Oct. 22, citing personal reasons for his decision.

That forces a byelection, which in theory should be held within 90 days. However, town officials say they'll ask Municipal Affairs officials if they can obtain an extension, because otherwise, the byelection would fall during the busy Christmas season.

Bearchell had been an Olds councillor for nine years. He was in the midst of his third term.

Bearchell is also manager of the Olds Golf Club. He told the Albertan he will continue in that capacity. However, he felt that due to those personal reasons, he could no longer fulfill his duties on council.

"I'm sad to leave, but I had to do what's best," he said.

“I would like to thank Wade for all his hard work and dedication over the past nine years,” Mayor Michael Muzychka said in a news release issued Tuesday. “Through his commitment and hard work Wade has made Olds a better place to work and live in.”

Council members are voted in at-large in the Town of Olds, therefore residents will not see any gaps in service as the mayor and remaining councillors govern for all residents of the town," the release said.

More information regarding the byelection will be published on the Town of Olds website and via other news media as details become available.
